Don began his career by working for Photography by Julius. After Julius retired, Don started Birchfield Photographic Studio in 1984. Don’s daughter, Andrea, has been helping out most of her life. She officially started working at the studio in 1997, when she was 16. In 2008, Andrea and Don jointly became owners of Birchfield Studio.

Don and Andrea attended a MI-SBTDC counseling event at Aquinas College where they listened to Lisa Kenny speak on topics related to small business. From this counseling event Lisa became the primary Business Consultant who has worked one-on-one with Don and Andrea on all the areas of business planning. Rita Dahmen, Business Consultant for MI-SBTDC Region 5 offices worked closely with Don and Andrea on marketing tactics best suitable for their business. “One of the challenges our business faced was about a year ago when there was drop in sales. With the help of the MI-SBTDC Region 5 office we saw a 10% increase in sales the following year,” stated Andrea. With slow business times and the economy on the downturn, we are very satisfied with the services the MI-SBTDC Region 5 office have provided us with.

Birchfield Studios continues to set new goals for themselves and they have developed a fairly new program which is the “Children’s Program.” Business Consultant, Lisa Kenny provided Don and Andrea with exceptional advice and suggestions on the “Children’s Program”. With  her counseling, Birchfield Studios was able to develop a new segment  in the program  “tractor day.” Parents can bring in their children and have a fun filled photo session with tractor (or farm) props.

When Don was asked, what made his business exceptional, he responded with, “customer service, good photographers, thank-you notes and personalization. Camera skills are important, but it is the people skills that capture expressions that people want to buy.” Don and Andrea don’t simply rely on digital camera flash, which tends to flatten your features. Instead, they use a combination of off-camera flash, studio lighting, on-camera flash, reflectors, and natural lighting to make sure your facial features look the best.

Birchfield is conveniently located on Marlette Road between Sandusky and Marlette. The studio is situated on 40 acres of natural and professionally landscaped property. This beautiful location allows clients a comfortable environment and a great setting to have their photos taken without having  to travel off-site to public parks.
